Lucknow Fire Tragedy: Building Sealed, FIR Registered As Probe Intensifies

A day after a devastating fire tore through a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area, claiming 15 lives and injuring several others, authorities have sealed the premises, registered a criminal case and launched multiple investigations into the tragedy.

The victims were primarily students and young professionals linked to an animation training institute and gaming centre operating inside the building. The blaze broke out on Monday afternoon, triggering panic as dozens of people attempted to escape the smoke-filled structure. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes, with some occupants climbing down cables and others jumping from the building as rescue teams rushed to the spot.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of life. The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased and those injured in the incident.

What Has Emerged So Far

Investigators have confirmed that the building did not possess a fire No Objection Certificate (NOC). Officials said the structure was originally approved as a residential property and, due to its height, did not fall under mandatory fire-clearance requirements. Authorities have since sealed the premises to facilitate forensic and technical examinations.

An FIR has been lodged under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Uttar Pradesh Fire Service Act, while the state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the circumstances leading to the disaster.

Questions have also surfaced over the building’s safety arrangements. Reports suggest a biometric access system at the entrance may have hampered evacuation efforts during the emergency, potentially trapping occupants inside as the fire spread rapidly.

The incident has further exposed alleged regulatory lapses, with scrutiny intensifying over how a property approved for residential use had reportedly been operating as a commercial establishment for several years.

One of the major areas under investigation is the building’s regulatory history. Records indicate that authorities had issued a demolition order against unauthorised construction on the premises in 2016. However, the order was later withdrawn, prompting questions about the circumstances behind the reversal and whether safety concerns were adequately addressed.

The exact cause of the fire also remains unclear. Preliminary assessments have pointed to a possible electrical short circuit linked to an LED display system installed in the basement. Other officials have suggested that the blaze may have originated within the building’s air-conditioning duct network.

Authorities have stressed that the final cause will only be determined after detailed forensic analysis and technical inspections are completed.
