Cristiano Ronaldo has given a young Venezuelan earthquake survivor a reason to smile after sending him a heartfelt video message and inviting him to watch a Portugal match once he recovers.

The football icon reached out to Andres Mieles, who lost his family and one of his legs in last month’s devastating earthquake, after learning about the boy’s story. In a touching video shared online, Ronaldo encouraged Andres to stay strong and promised to meet him in person in the future.

“Hello Andres, how are you? I’m making this video to send you a hug,” Ronaldo said.

“I know you’re a superfan. When you get well, I want to invite you to watch one of my matches and enjoy it, okay? I would love to meet you. A hug, my friend.”

Reports also say the Portugal captain is sending Andres a signed national team jersey as a special gift.

Boy’s story moved football fans

Andres survived the powerful June 2026 earthquake in Venezuela after being pulled alive from the rubble by rescue workers. The disaster, however, claimed the lives of his family, and doctors had to amputate one of his legs because of the injuries he suffered.

During his recovery in hospital, Andres revealed that his biggest wish was to own Cristiano Ronaldo’s Panini FIFA World Cup sticker after his treasured sticker album was lost in the earthquake. His story spread rapidly across social media, with thousands of fans tagging Ronaldo in the hope that he would see the appeal.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner did more than that, responding personally with a message that has since resonated with fans worldwide.

Ronaldo shines as Portugal advances

Ronaldo’s heartwarming gesture came just days after leading Portugal into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The 41-year-old scored from the penalty spot as Portugal rallied from a goal down to defeat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto. Ivan Perisic had put Croatia ahead before Ronaldo equalised, and substitute Goncalo Ramos headed home an injury-time winner to seal a dramatic comeback for Roberto Martinez’s side.

The victory booked Portugal’s place in the last 16, where they will face neighbours Spain in one of the tournament’s biggest knockout fixtures.
