Neymar Retires From International Football After Brazil’s World Cup Exit to Norway
Neymar has announced his retirement from international football after Brazil’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. The 34-year-old confirmed that the loss marked his final appearance for the Selecao, bringing an end to a glittering 16-year career in Brazil colours.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Neymar said he had given everything to return for one last World Cup but accepted that the time had come to step away from international football.
“I tried and tried, but now it’s over,” Neymar said.
Brazil’s hopes of winning a record-extending sixth World Cup were dashed after Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal for Norway. Neymar pulled one back with a stoppage-time penalty, but the late strike was not enough to prevent the five-time champions from crashing out of the tournament.
The defeat also ended Neymar’s final World Cup journey, one that began under difficult circumstances. The veteran forward arrived at the tournament carrying an injury and missed Brazil’s opening matches before returning to action under head coach Carlo Ancelotti. After regaining fitness, he was mostly used as a substitute, featuring off the bench against Scotland and Norway.
His penalty against Norway proved to be the final goal of his international career.
Neymar retires as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer, having scored 80 goals in 129 appearances since making his senior debut in 2010. Over the next 16 years, he established himself as one of the greatest players in the nation’s football history, becoming the face of the Selecao across four FIFA World Cups.
Although the World Cup title eluded him, Neymar enjoyed significant success on the international stage. He played a key role in Brazil’s FIFA Confederations Cup triumph in 2013 and captained the team to Olympic gold at the Rio 2016 Games after helping the country win silver at the London Olympics in 2012.
His international career was defined by moments of brilliance as well as setbacks. Injuries disrupted several major tournaments, while the burden of leading one of football’s most successful nations remained a constant challenge. Even so, Neymar consistently delivered memorable performances and rewrote Brazil’s record books during a career that inspired a generation of footballers.
After the final whistle against Norway, Neymar stood in tears as teammates gathered around him, marking the emotional end of an era for Brazilian football. While questions will remain about what he might have achieved without injuries at crucial moments, he leaves the international stage as Brazil’s record goalscorer and one of the country’s greatest-ever players.
