Monsoon Fury Across India: Delhi Waterlogged, Surat Flooded, Landslides Trigger Chaos in Several States
Torrential monsoon rain battered large parts of India over the past 24 hours, leaving a trail of destruction across several states. Heavy downpours triggered flooding, landslides, building collapses and major disruptions to road and rail traffic, while rescue teams were deployed in multiple locations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that intense rainfall is likely to continue in several regions.
With the monsoon intensifying, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation with the chief ministers of Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, assuring them of all possible assistance from the Centre.
Delhi-NCR Submerged, Three Dead in Building Collapse
Delhi recorded one of its heaviest spells of rain this season, inundating roads and crippling traffic across the city. The IMD issued red and orange alerts as several areas, including Mayur Vihar, Pusa, Lodhi Road and Safdarjung, received heavy rainfall.
Waterlogging was reported from Sadar Bazar, Greater Kailash, Badarpur, Nasirpur, Swarup Nagar and several other localities, while long traffic jams were witnessed on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NH-48.
In Rohini, three people were killed after a newly constructed four-storey building collapsed. Officials said initial findings suggest ongoing plumbing work may have weakened the structure, with no immediate indication that rainfall caused the collapse.
Neighbouring Gurugram also witnessed severe waterlogging, bringing traffic to a near standstill on key roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Sohna Road and Basai.
Mumbai Rains Disrupt Rail Services, Rescue Operation Underway
Heavy showers returned to Mumbai after a brief lull, delaying suburban train services and disrupting normal life. Railway services to Gujarat remained affected due to waterlogged tracks, while landslides in the Bhor Ghat section impacted trains on the Mumbai-Pune route.
In Pimpri Chinchwad, rescue teams continued efforts after a massive garbage dump collapsed following heavy rain, with 11 people feared trapped under the debris.
Surat Flooded, Nine Killed
Gujarat’s Surat remained inundated after relentless rainfall flooded roads and residential areas. At least nine people have died in rain-related incidents over the past few days, officials said. Thousands of residents from low-lying areas were evacuated, while emergency teams supplied food and essentials to people stranded in waterlogged apartment buildings.
Landslides, Flash Floods in Kerala and J&K
In Kerala’s Wayanad district, search operations continued for five workers missing after a rain-soaked mound of earth collapsed at a tunnel construction site. Rescue efforts have been hampered by continuing rain.
Heavy rain also triggered flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, prompting emergency response measures. The situation was among those reviewed by Amit Shah during his discussions with the state’s leadership.
More Rain Ahead
Rajasthan also remained under the grip of an active monsoon, with Ramganj Mandi in Kota district recording the state’s highest rainfall. The IMD has forecast more heavy rain over the next few days across several parts of the country, warning of flooding, landslides and continued disruption.
As the southwest monsoon gathers strength, authorities across multiple states remain on high alert, with rescue and relief operations continuing in the worst-affected areas.
