After months of anticipation, Thalapathy Vijay’s final film as a lead actor, Jana Nayagan, has finally released in theatres worldwide. The political action drama, directed by H. Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, marks the end of Vijay’s illustrious film career as he shifts his focus to full-time politics.

The film had faced multiple delays, including the cancellation of its planned Pongal release and a legal battle over its CBFC certification. It eventually received an ‘A’ certificate and released with a runtime of 183 minutes.

Featuring an ensemble cast of Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Narain, Jana Nayagan also boasts music by Anirudh Ravichander.

Strong Advance Bookings, Festival-Like Atmosphere

The film opened to an enthusiastic response from Vijay fans, with theatres witnessing massive crowds for the first-day-first-show. Celebrations erupted across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and several international markets as fans gathered with banners, drums and fireworks to celebrate the release.

According to trade estimates, domestic advance bookings crossed ₹14–15 crore, while the overall first-day advance booking collection, including block seats, stood at around ₹25.37 crore, as reported by Sacnilk.

Leo Still Holds the Edge

Although Jana Nayagan has generated significant buzz, it is yet to surpass the pre-release numbers of Vijay’s 2023 blockbuster Leo. The Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed film had registered ₹29.83 crore in domestic pre-sales and went on to collect nearly ₹148.5 crore worldwide on its opening day, making it Vijay’s biggest box-office opener.

Industry observers will now be watching whether strong walk-in bookings and positive audience reviews can help Jana Nayagan narrow that gap.

Vijay’s Emotional Goodbye to Cinema

Promoted as Vijay’s 69th and final film, Jana Nayagan carries added emotional weight for fans. The release comes after the actor entered active politics and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following his party TVK’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

With its release, Jana Nayagan marks the conclusion of Vijay’s journey as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars, making it one of the most significant releases of the year for his fans and the industry alike.
