Gujarat formally began its preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.
As Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel received the Commonwealth Games flag during a cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar. The flag was handed over by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who returned from Glasgow after attending the closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the Commonwealth Sport movement officially passed the flag to India, the next host nation.
Sanghavi was part of the Indian delegation at the closing ceremony alongside Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P. T. Usha.
The symbolic handover in Gandhinagar marked the official start of Gujarat’s preparations for the 2030 Games, which will be hosted in Ahmedabad. The ceremony was attended by Gujarat para-athletes Rakesh Bhatt, Rohit Majgul, and para table tennis player Sonal Patel, who represented India at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Congratulating India’s contingent, Chief Minister Patel highlighted the country’s strong performance at the 2026 Games.
“Heartiest congratulations to all our athletes and para-athletes who made Bharat proud with an outstanding tally of 39 medals in Glasgow. Their determination and dedication inspire us as we prepare to make the 2030 Commonwealth Games a historic success,” Patel said in a post on X.
Speaking to reporters after arriving at Ahmedabad Airport, Sanghavi said Gujarat is committed to delivering a world-class sporting event. “The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be organised on a grand scale with world-class facilities for athletes. Our aim is to provide the best possible environment so that every athlete can perform at their highest level,” he said.
Ahmedabad was officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in November 2025. The event will mark India’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, after New Delhi staged the 2010 edition.
