Always Falling Sick While Travelling? 4 Supplements To Know About
Travel can be exciting, but falling sick during a trip can quickly ruin the experience. Changes in routine, irregular sleep, long journeys, unfamiliar foods and exposure to new surroundings can all take a toll on the body.
Whether it is an upset stomach, exhaustion or a sudden cold, travel-related health problems are fairly common. While no supplement can guarantee protection from illness, some nutrients and supplements may support normal immune function or provide modest benefits in specific situations.
Physician and content creator Dr Kunal Sood recently shared a list of supplements that people may consider as part of their routine before or during travel.
However, supplements should not replace the basics. Staying hydrated, getting sufficient sleep, maintaining hand hygiene and taking precautions with food, water and insects remain essential when travelling.
Dr Sood also noted that these supplements have not been shown to work better when taken together and should not replace safe food and water practices, insect precautions or hand hygiene.
1. Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays an important role in supporting normal immune function. However, taking vitamin D supplements does not reliably prevent respiratory infections in otherwise healthy people.
If someone is deficient, correcting that deficiency can be beneficial. But taking vitamin D immediately before a trip should not be viewed as a quick way to prevent travel-related infections.
2. Zinc
Zinc is another important nutrient involved in normal immune function. However, routine zinc supplementation has not been clearly shown to prevent colds.
Some research suggests that oral zinc lozenges taken soon after cold symptoms begin may slightly shorten the duration of illness. Intranasal zinc, on the other hand, should be avoided because of its association with loss of smell.
3. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is widely used by people hoping to avoid getting sick while travelling.
Regular vitamin C intake does not generally prevent colds in the general population, although it may slightly reduce their duration. Starting supplementation only after cold symptoms appear has not consistently produced the same benefit.
Taking excessive amounts can also lead to side effects such as stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
4. Probiotics
Probiotics may be particularly appealing to travellers because of their connection with digestive health.
Certain probiotic strains have shown modest benefits in reducing some respiratory infections, but their effects depend heavily on the specific strain and product. Evidence is also not strong enough to routinely recommend probiotics for preventing travellers’ diarrhoea.
What Matters Most When Travelling?
Supplements may have a limited role, but they are not a substitute for basic precautions. Getting enough rest, drinking safe water, eating carefully prepared food, washing your hands regularly and protecting yourself against insects can all help reduce the risk of falling ill during a trip.
If you have a medical condition, take regular medication or are considering high-dose supplements, it is best to speak with a healthcare professional before adding them to your routine.
