‘Astronaut Sleep’ Explained: Can This Sleeping Position Help You Rest Better?

Everyone has a favourite way to sleep — curled up on one side, stretched out on their back or buried under a mountain of pillows.

But while comfort matters, the position you maintain for hours each night can also influence how your body feels when you wake up. One position attracting attention is the so-called zero-gravity sleep position, inspired by the neutral body posture astronauts adopt in space.

What Is Zero-Gravity Sleeping?

The zero-gravity position involves gently elevating both the upper body and legs while keeping the knees slightly bent. The posture is designed to distribute pressure more evenly and reduce strain on the spine and joints.

Dr Nalini Nagalla, head of pulmonology and sleep disorders, describes it as a slightly reclined position that allows the body to settle without remaining completely flat.

Dr Lancelot Mark Pinto, consultant pulmonologist and epidemiologist at P.D. Hinduja Hospital and MRC Centre, Khar, explains that the position resembles the neutral posture associated with microgravity and can reduce musculoskeletal stress.

For everyday use, the head and knees may be raised slightly above the level of the heart, creating an angle of roughly 120 degrees between the hips, according to Dr Pinto.

What Are the Possible Benefits?

There is not enough long-term evidence to suggest that zero-gravity sleeping is universally better than other sleep positions. However, experts say certain people may find it more comfortable.

Elevating the upper body may reduce pressure on the lower back and could be helpful for people experiencing nighttime acid reflux. It may also help some people who snore or have mild breathing difficulties during sleep.

Raising the legs can potentially ease swelling and may provide comfort for people dealing with conditions such as varicose veins or sciatica. Some pregnant women may also find the position supportive, particularly when back discomfort makes lying completely flat uncomfortable.

However, the position is not necessarily practical for everyone.

Dr Mihir Gangakhedkar, consultant pulmonologist at Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai, notes that people with back discomfort may benefit, but maintaining the position throughout the night can be difficult. People who naturally sleep on their sides may also struggle to adapt.

Can You Try It Without an Adjustable Bed?

Adjustable beds make the position considerably easier to achieve, but they can be expensive.

A simpler alternative is to use a firm wedge to raise the upper body by around 30 to 45 degrees and place a bolster or several pillows beneath the knees to lift the legs slightly.

The problem is stability. Regular pillows can shift or flatten while you sleep, meaning the carefully created position may not last until morning.

Is Zero-Gravity Actually the Best Way to Sleep?

Not necessarily.

There is no single sleeping position that works perfectly for everyone. Side sleeping can be comfortable for many people and may make breathing easier, while other positions can be more suitable depending on individual needs.

According to Dr Nagalla, the most important question is whether your sleeping position allows you to wake up without stiffness, discomfort or disrupted sleep.

“Sleep isn’t something that needs to be over-engineered,” she says.

Sleep quality also depends on much more than posture. Stress, screen exposure, light, daily routines and consistent sleep schedules can all influence how well you rest.

Ultimately, the best sleeping position is one that feels comfortable and allows you to sleep through the night without causing pain or worsening existing symptoms.

With sleep-tracking devices, specialised mattresses, supplements and other “sleepmaxxing” products becoming increasingly popular, it can be tempting to turn rest into another optimisation project. But sometimes, better sleep may simply come down to finding a comfortable position and maintaining healthy sleep habits consistently.
