Senior JDU leader Devesh Chandra Thakur on Sunday openly backed Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar as a potential future chief minister, saying he hoped the son of JDU president Nitish Kumar would follow his father’s path and rise to the highest levels of public life.

Thakur made the remarks during Nishant Kumar’s visit to Sitamarhi, where JDU workers gave the minister a warm reception. Asked whether he viewed Nishant as a future chief minister, Thakur said there was no reason to rule it out and wished the young leader success.

Thakur Highlights Nitish’s Contribution

Praising Nitish Kumar’s political record, Thakur said the JDU leader had made a significant contribution to Bihar during his long tenure as chief minister. He expressed hope that Nishant would follow his father’s example and build his own reputation in public life.

JDU workers at the event also voiced confidence in Nishant’s leadership, saying the party had strong faith in his political future.

Nishant’s Entry Into Politics

Nishant Kumar, 45, entered active politics in March this year, shortly before Nitish Kumar chose to contest the Rajya Sabha elections, bringing his more than two-decade tenure as Bihar chief minister to an end.

Nishant initially declined an offer to join the new state government led by BJP’s Samrat Choudhary as deputy chief minister. He later joined the cabinet as health minister following demands from JDU leaders and workers.

When asked to assess Nishant’s performance as health minister, Thakur said it was too early to judge him, pointing out that he had only recently begun his political journey.

Nishant Promises Inclusive Governance

During his Sitamarhi visit, Nishant Kumar said he was happy to visit the place associated with Goddess Sita and prayed that he could live up to public expectations. He said he wanted to work for every section of society, including women, OBCs and EBCs, following the example set by his father.

Thakur’s comments have added to speculation about Nishant Kumar’s long-term political role within the JDU, even as the young minister begins to establish himself in active politics.
