SpaceX is planning a colossal Starship launch facility along Louisiana’s southern coast that could eventually become the largest rocket-launch site in the world.
The proposed “Starbase Louisiana” in Vermilion Parish is part of Elon Musk’s broader push to make Starship the company’s primary launch vehicle. The project could involve an investment of around $100 billion and eventually support more than 30 Starship flights each day.
Here are 10 key points about the ambitious project:
1. Construction may begin in 2027
SpaceX expects construction at the Louisiana site to begin by the end of 2027. If development and regulatory approvals proceed as planned, the first launch could take place as early as 2029.
2. Dozens of launches every day
The company envisions more than a dozen launch towers at the complex. According to Musk, the site could eventually support more than 30 Starship launches daily, a scale that would make it the largest launch facility on Earth.
3. Louisiana’s space industry could be transformed
Louisiana has never conducted an orbital rocket launch. The proposed SpaceX facility could dramatically change that, potentially turning the state into one of the world’s busiest locations for orbital launches.
4. It will share the Starbase name
SpaceX plans to call the complex “Starbase, Louisiana”, after its existing Starbase facility in South Texas.
The Texas site is currently the centre of Starship’s testing and development programme, where 13 test flights have been conducted.
5. Designed for operational Starship flights
The Louisiana facility is expected to focus on operational missions rather than early-stage testing.
SpaceX’s long-term objective is to use Starship to carry cargo and other payloads into orbit while recovering and reusing both the Super Heavy booster and the spacecraft.
6. Full reusability remains the ultimate goal
SpaceX wants to recover every major part of Starship and rapidly prepare the vehicles for subsequent flights.
The company has yet to demonstrate successful recovery of the upper spacecraft, making this one of the programme’s biggest technical challenges. If achieved, rapid reuse could substantially lower launch costs and increase flight frequency.
7. More than a launch complex
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and COO, has described the proposed facility as a “self-sustaining spaceport”.
The development could include propellant production, its own power-generation systems, deep-water shipping facilities and infrastructure for processing vehicles. An airport could also be part of the long-term plan.
8. Huge land area
The proposed project would cover approximately 125,000 acres.
Shotwell said SpaceX intends to preserve large sections of the property, particularly valuable wetlands, while supporting conservation, restoration and environmental stewardship programmes.
9. Regulatory challenges lie ahead
The project will require extensive environmental and regulatory reviews covering wetlands, natural resources and launch operations.
SpaceX’s facilities in Texas have faced lengthy approval processes, while environmental organisations have continued to challenge the company’s activities through legal action.
10. Starship at the centre of SpaceX’s future
The Louisiana proposal underscores SpaceX’s growing reliance on Starship as it seeks to move beyond the Falcon 9 era.
SpaceX launch chief Kiko Dontchev said a Falcon 9 mission carrying Starlink satellites from Florida would be the state’s final such mission, with future Starlink launches from Florida expected to transition to Starship.
If Starship becomes operational at the scale SpaceX envisions, Starbase Louisiana could become a major hub for a new era of high-frequency, reusable orbital launches.
