India settled for a draw against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo despite enforcing the follow-on and needing only four wickets on the final day.

Sonal Dinusha produced a stunning resistance, following his first-innings century with an unbeaten 133 to help Sri Lanka reach 429/9 before declaring. Keshara Nuwantha and Lahiru Kumara also played crucial roles, consuming valuable overs and frustrating the Indian attack.

India had earlier bowled Sri Lanka out for 290 after posting 503/9 declared, putting themselves in a commanding position. However, the visitors could not finish the job as the Sri Lankan lower order held firm throughout Day 5.

Dinusha’s performance was historic, making him only the third batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test while following on. His 103 and 133* also made him the standout performer of the match.

The draw means India still won the two-Test series 1-0, handing head coach Gautam Gambhir his first away Test series victory since taking charge in 2024. Devdutt Padikkal was named Player of the Series after scoring centuries in both matches.

But the missed opportunity has significantly hurt India’s hopes of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship Final. India now need an extraordinary run of results in their remaining seven Tests to stay in contention.

Captain Shubman Gill praised Sri Lanka’s resilience and backed Manav Suthar, who emerged as one of India’s key positives during the series. Yet, after dominating the Test for much of the contest, India will rue their inability to claim the four wickets that stood between them and a series clean sweep.
