Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer To Quit Parliament, Citing Shift To International Affairs

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his decision to step down as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras, ending his 11-year tenure in Parliament and triggering a by-election. Starmer said Tuesday that he was leaving Westminster to focus on international issues, particularly defence, security, trade and technology.

“It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Starmer said in a social media statement. Starmer represented the London constituency for 11 years and served as Labour leader for six of them. The Camden New Journal reported that he had informed the Labour Party of his decision.

Andy Burnham was parachuted into the prime minister’s role in July after Starmer resigned as Labour leader amid mounting pressure from within the party. A former human rights lawyer, Starmer played a key role in rebuilding Labour and led the party to a sweeping victory in the 2024 general election.

His time as prime minister, however, was marked by falling popularity and a series of political setbacks. Growing criticism from Labour MPs ultimately forced him to step down after two turbulent years in office.
