The Sports Ministry on Wednesday approved 246 officials and support staff for India’s 503-athlete contingent at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, beginning September 19.
The ministry had earlier sanctioned 492 athletes, but the number has now increased to 503, with additional athletes, particularly in athletics, being included in the final contingent. India’s overall contingent will comprise 768 members, including 19 officials. The group will be led by Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav, while Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala will serve as the Chief Medical Officer.
Athletics has been allocated the largest support team, with 31 members for its 79-athlete contingent. The support staff includes 20 coaches, headed by national coach P Radhakrishnan. However, star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will miss the Games due to injury.
The two Indian cricket teams will have 20 support staff members, led by VVS Laxman.
India will compete in 36 disciplines at the Games, which will conclude on October 4.
