Mamta Kulkarni has once again become a talking point on social media after videos of her dancing to her popular ’90s Bollywood songs went viral.

The former actress was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Rajasthan Film Festival in Jaipur. During the event, she joined students on stage and danced to some of her most recognisable tracks, including ‘Koi Jaaye To Le Aaye’ from Ghatak, ‘Ek Munda Meri Umar Ka’ from Karan Arjun and ‘Lamba Lamba Ghunghat’ from Sabse Bada Khiladi.

While her dance moves brought back memories of her Bollywood days, it was her appearance that drew much of the online attention.

Kulkarni was dressed in a glamorous outfit, a noticeable departure from the saffron-clad spiritual persona associated with her after she took sanyas in 2025.

Social Media Reacts to Mamta’s Transformation

The videos prompted a flood of reactions online, with users commenting on the contrast between Kulkarni’s current appearance and her recent spiritual journey.

Some users appeared surprised to see her dancing to her old film songs.

“Bhai ye to sanyashi ho gayi thi,” one user commented.

Another wrote, “Ye to sadhu ban gayi thi na,” while a third joked, “Isne to sanyash le liya tha.”

One comment read, “From moksh to maya reverse concept,” while another user referred to her as “Mahamandaleshwar.”

Not all reactions were about her decision to take sanyas. Several users praised her appearance and said she continued to look glamorous.

“She looks amazing,” one person wrote, while another called her “My generation ka super star.”

A third user defended her appearance, writing, “Isko sadhvi nahi banana tha. She is very glamorous and gorgeous.”

Mamta Kulkarni’s Sanyas Journey

Kulkarni took sanyas during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on January 24, 2025. She performed the Pind Daan ritual at the Sangam and was given the spiritual name Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri.

She was also appointed Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara.

Her appointment subsequently triggered controversy within the Akhara. Kulkarni announced her resignation from the position in February 2025, but later said that her resignation had not been accepted and that she would continue her spiritual journey.

Why Did Mamta Kulkarni Leave Bollywood?

Kulkarni was among the better-known actresses of the 1990s before stepping away from the film industry. She remained away from Mumbai for nearly 24 years and returned to the city in 2024.

During her years away, she was linked to Vicky Goswami, who has been described in media reports as an alleged drug trafficker. In 2016, Thane Police named Kulkarni as an accused in a drug-related case linked to Goswami and alleged that she had attended a meeting in Kenya connected to the case.

Kulkarni denied any involvement in the drug trade.

In 2024, the Bombay High Court quashed the case against her, observing that the proceedings were manifestly frivolous and that there was insufficient material to continue the prosecution.

Kulkarni returned to Mumbai in December 2024 after years away. She said at the time that she was not planning to return to Bollywood and that her focus remained on her spiritual journey.

Mamta Kulkarni’s ’90s Bollywood Legacy

Before her long absence from the industry, Kulkarni established herself as a popular face of 1990s Hindi cinema.

She appeared in films including Tirangaa, Aashik Aawara, Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Ghatak and China Gate.

She won the Filmfare Lux New Face of the Year award for Aashik Aawara in 1994.

Now, decades after becoming a familiar face of ’90s Bollywood, Kulkarni is back in the spotlight for a very different reason—her return to the stage, dancing to the songs that once made her a household name.
