India Stage Comeback in Indore, Reclaim T20I Series Lead After Bowling Resurgence Against Ranchi Setback
India Bounce Back With 14-Run Win Over West Indies, Take 2-1 Lead in T20I Series
India put their disappointing defeat in Ranchi behind them with a much-improved bowling display to beat the West Indies by 14 runs in the fourth T20I at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. The hosts defended their total of 223, restricting the visitors to 209 for 7 and taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
After failing to defend 250 in the previous match, India needed their bowlers to deliver under pressure. This time, the attack responded with early breakthroughs, crucial wickets in the middle overs and disciplined execution towards the end of the innings.
India made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in Prince Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy for Shivam Dube and Kuldeep Yadav. Both players made their presence felt, with Nitish breaking an important partnership and Prince maintaining control during the closing stages.
Arshdeep Singh led the bowling effort with three wickets, while Naman Dhir picked up two. Axar Patel and Nitish claimed one wicket each to help India regain control of the contest.
Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan Set Up India’s Total
India began their innings aggressively, with Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan producing a remarkable second-wicket partnership after the early dismissal of Sanju Samson.
Samson scored just three before Shamar Joseph sent him back in the second over. Abhishek and Kishan responded by taking the attack to the West Indies bowlers, adding 108 runs for the second wicket and pushing India past 100 in only 7.2 overs.
Abhishek dominated the partnership, reaching his half-century in just 18 balls. He eventually departed for 69 off 30 deliveries, hitting six fours and five sixes.
Kishan contributed a rapid 37 from 18 balls, including six fours and a six. Their aggressive approach put India in a strong position to post a total well beyond 250.
However, the West Indies recovered through Shamar Springer and Roston Chase, who struck at regular intervals to derail the hosts’ momentum.
Chase and Springer Halt India’s Charge
Springer dismissed Abhishek after the batter mistimed a pull shot, while Chase removed Kishan when he missed an attempted attack down the ground and was stumped by captain Shai Hope.
Chase then trapped India skipper Shreyas Iyer lbw for one, putting further pressure on the middle order.
Naman Dhir made 10 before falling to Springer, while Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 21 off 14 balls before being dismissed by Hope.
Tilak Varma and Axar Patel attempted to rebuild the innings, but their dismissals added to India’s difficulties. Tilak was run out for 28 off 16 deliveries, while Axar departed for 20 following a mix-up with Arshdeep Singh.
India eventually finished on 223 in 20 overs. Prince Yadav struck three boundaries in the final over to provide a late boost before Shamar Joseph bowled Mayank Yadav with the last delivery.
Chase, Joseph and Springer finished with two wickets apiece, ensuring the West Indies had recovered from India’s blistering start.
Arshdeep Strikes Early as India Target Hope
The West Indies began their chase looking to capitalise on the batting-friendly conditions, but Arshdeep delivered an important breakthrough in the second over by dismissing Shai Hope for five.
Hope had scored an unbeaten century in Ranchi, but India ensured he could not repeat that performance in Indore.
Shimron Hetmyer and Kamil Pooran responded with an aggressive partnership, adding 60 runs to revive the visitors’ hopes. Hetmyer scored 43 off 26 balls, including six fours and two sixes, while Pooran contributed 42 from 27 deliveries.
The pair threatened to put India under pressure before Naman Dhir broke their stand by dismissing both batters in quick succession.
Axar Patel added to the West Indies’ problems by removing Rovman Powell for five, leaving the visitors struggling to maintain their momentum.
India’s Bowlers Seal the Win in the Final Overs
Nitish Kumar Reddy delivered another important breakthrough when he dismissed Quentin Sampson for 21, with Tilak Varma taking the catch in the deep.
Prince Yadav supported the attack with a disciplined spell, restricting scoring opportunities as India tightened their grip on the match.
Sherfane Rutherford attempted to revive the chase with 32 off 20 balls, but Arshdeep returned at a crucial stage and changed the complexion of the contest.
The left-arm pacer struck twice in the 18th over, dismissing Rutherford and Keemo Paul with accurate yorkers. The double breakthrough left the West Indies needing an increasingly difficult scoring surge.
Shamar Springer provided late entertainment with an explosive 35 off just 11 deliveries, briefly raising hopes of an unlikely comeback. However, India’s bowlers held their nerve, preventing the visitors from reaching the target.
The West Indies ended their innings at 209 for 7, handing India a 14-run victory.
The result marked a significant response from the hosts after their bowling struggles in Ranchi. With Arshdeep leading the attack and timely contributions from Dhir, Nitish, Axar and Prince, India regained the series lead and set up an important final stretch in the five-match contest.
