Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka Region at 140-Km Depth

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 in magnitude struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula region on Friday, October 16, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported, according to Reuters.

The tremor occurred at a depth of 140 kilometres (86.99 miles), the seismic monitoring agency said. Initial reports did not provide information about casualties, structural damage or possible disruptions following the earthquake.

Kamchatka Frequently Experiences Powerful Earthquakes

Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, located in the country’s Far East, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for intense seismic activity and frequent earthquakes. Its location near active tectonic plate boundaries makes it vulnerable to powerful tremors.

The peninsula experienced another major earthquake in September 2025, when a magnitude 7.8 tremor struck offshore. The earthquake shook buildings and prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn after the threat subsided, AFP reported.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earlier earthquake was centred approximately 128 kilometres (80 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, at a depth of about 10 kilometres (six miles).

Russia’s state geophysical service assessed the magnitude of that earthquake at 7.4 and recorded at least five aftershocks.

Earlier Earthquake Triggered Tsunami Warning

Following the September 2025 earthquake, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre warned of the possibility of hazardous waves along nearby coastlines. The alert was subsequently lifted after the centre determined that the tsunami threat had passed, AFP reported.

Vladimir Solodov, who was the region’s governor at the time, said the earthquake had once again tested the resilience of local residents. He also stated that no damage had been reported at that point and appealed for calm.

Further details about the impact of Friday’s earthquake were not immediately available. Authorities and seismic monitoring agencies are expected to provide additional information as assessments of the event become available.
