Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal Stampede: 19 Dead, Seven Arrested; Probe Ordered After Tragedy

Seven people, including members of the organising committee, have been arrested following a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata that claimed at least 19 lives and left around 25 people injured on Saturday evening, October 17.

The incident occurred at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal at approximately 7.40 pm amid heavy crowding and rainfall. Preliminary reports suggested that overcrowding and possible structural failure may have contributed to the tragedy.

Police initially detained nearly a dozen people for questioning as part of the investigation. Officers said they were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and would take legal action if any negligence or safety violations were established. Seven people were subsequently arrested.

According to Kolkata Police, the stampede occurred near the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chor Bagan) Durga Puja pandal, which falls under the jurisdiction of Girish Park police station. The venue was crowded with devotees despite the rain.

Those injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police, fire brigade personnel and disaster management teams were deployed to assist with rescue operations. The pandal was subsequently closed to visitors.

Organising Committee Members Resign

Jayanta Banerjee, general secretary of the Chorbagan Durga Puja Committee, resigned following the incident. Other office-bearers of the committee also confirmed their resignations in the aftermath of the tragedy.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that a fact-finding committee headed by a sitting High Court judge would investigate the incident. He also announced financial assistance and government employment for the families of those who died.

The state government will provide Rs 25 lakh in compensation to the families of each deceased person, along with government jobs. The injured will receive Rs 5 lakh each, while the government will cover their medical treatment, according to a statement released by the West Bengal Chief Minister’s Office.

Eyewitnesses Point to Narrow Gates and Poor Lighting

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as crowds surged near the pandal’s exit.

One witness told ANI that several people lost consciousness during the rush and that some were transported away on motorcycles.

Another eyewitness alleged that the entrance and exit gates were narrow and that the area lacked adequate lighting. The witness also said their daughter and granddaughter had been hospitalised following the incident.

The state government launched a toll-free helpline, 18003455678, to assist people seeking information and support after the tragedy.

Prime Minister Modi Announces Financial Assistance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced ex-gratia payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

The families of each deceased person will receive Rs 2 lakh, while those injured will be given Rs 50,000 each.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences to the affected families and said he had spoken with the West Bengal Chief Minister about the situation. Shah postponed his scheduled programmes in the state for Sunday and said he would visit the injured in hospital.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed sorrow over the deaths and wished those injured a speedy recovery. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described the incident as heartbreaking, called for immediate medical assistance and a fair investigation, and urged party workers to support relief efforts.

West Bengal Governor RN Ravi also conveyed his condolences. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed sadness over the incident and prayed for the recovery of those injured.

Political Row Over Crowd Management

The tragedy triggered a political dispute over the arrangements at the venue. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) questioned whether sufficient police personnel, civic volunteers, ambulances and crowd-control measures had been deployed.

The party demanded accountability from the authorities and questioned whether Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari would accept responsibility for the incident.

The circumstances leading to the stampede, including the adequacy of crowd management and the condition of the temporary structures, are expected to be examined during the investigation.

Heavy Rain Amid Durga Puja Celebrations

Heavy rainfall affected Kolkata and adjoining areas from Saptami afternoon. Although the showers briefly eased, rain resumed in the evening as people continued visiting Durga Puja pandals across the city.

Chorbagan Sarbojanin was among the popular attractions drawing visitors to its annual celebrations.

Chorbagan Sarbojanin Celebrates Its 91st Year

The puja committee was celebrating its 91st year with the theme AROB, a Bengali term associated with escaping sound and noise.

The pandal’s artistic presentation depicted Goddess Durga and her children in deep meditation, with lighting and sound arrangements intended to create a tranquil atmosphere. In a departure from the traditional warrior-like portrayal, Durga was shown in a peaceful state, while Mahishasura was depicted surrendering his weapons.

Organisers said the theme was intended to promote peace, composure and calmness amid global violence, conflict and hostility.

The celebrations, however, were overshadowed by the deadly stampede, prompting questions about public safety and crowd management at one of Kolkata’s major festive gatherings.
