Russian FM Sergey Lavrov Reaches US For High-Level G20 Meeting In Atlanta
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has landed in the United States to attend the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Russian state news agency TASS reported on Friday.
The two-day diplomatic gathering brings together representatives of major economies at a time when several international conflicts and political disputes remain unresolved. The ongoing war in Ukraine, tensions involving the United States and Iran, and elevated global oil prices are among the key issues shaping the wider geopolitical landscape.
G20 Meeting Comes Ahead Of US Midterm Elections
The Atlanta meeting is taking place just days before the important US midterm elections. It will also serve as a preparatory platform for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami, which will be hosted at US President Donald Trump’s Doral resort.
The foreign ministers’ discussions are expected to address major international challenges and help lay the groundwork for the leaders’ gathering later this year.
Moscow Signals Focus On Western Sanctions
Russia has indicated that Lavrov will use his address at the Atlanta meeting to criticise international sanctions. Moscow announced on Thursday that opposing such restrictions would be a key part of the foreign minister’s message.
Lavrov’s arrival in the US also coincides with preparations for fresh diplomatic discussions involving representatives from Moscow, Kyiv and Washington. The proposed talks are intended to explore a possible settlement to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which continues to remain a major issue in international diplomacy.
