Sensex Jumps More Than 300 Points, Nifty Surpasses 23,900 as Market Rally Extends to Fifth Day

The Indian stock market maintained its bullish momentum on Wednesday, November 4, with benchmark indices opening higher for the fifth consecutive trading session. Easing crude oil prices, fresh buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and positive corporate earnings helped strengthen investor confidence.

Buying interest in FMCG, banking and heavyweight stocks supported the upward movement, while IT shares remained under pressure.

At 9:22 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 77,230.45, up 312.60 points or 0.41%. The NSE Nifty 50 also advanced 91 points, or 0.38%, to reach 23,901.85.

The latest gains followed Tuesday’s strong performance, when the Sensex surged 1,225.07 points (1.62%) to close at 76,917.85. The Nifty also rallied 370.05 points (1.58%), settling at 23,810.85. Both indices had registered gains over four consecutive sessions.

FMCG and Financial Stocks Lead Sectoral Rally

The majority of sectoral indices were trading higher in early deals, with FMCG stocks leading the advance.

The Nifty FMCG index gained 1.48%, followed by Nifty Cement, which rose 0.96%. Nifty Financial Services 25/50 advanced 0.67%, while Nifty Financial Services climbed 0.64%.

Nifty Healthcare gained 0.45%, Nifty Private Bank rose 0.43%, and Nifty Auto advanced 0.42%.

However, the IT and metal sectors remained under pressure. Nifty IT declined 0.57%, while Nifty Metal slipped 0.18%.

Among Sensex constituents, ITC was the biggest gainer, rising 3.05%. SBI added 1.41%, and HDFC Bank advanced 1.35%. Adani Ports, BEL and M&M also traded higher.

Power Grid was among the major laggards, falling 0.98%, while TCS dropped 0.97%. Bharti Airtel, Eternal, HCL Technologies, Hindalco and Infosys were also in the red.

India VIX Gains 2%, Signals Cautious Sentiment

The India VIX, which tracks expected volatility in the stock market, increased 2.06% to 16.05. The rise indicated that some uncertainty persisted among investors despite the positive movement in benchmark indices.

Falling Crude Prices Provide Additional Support

Global crude oil prices moved lower in early Wednesday trading as investors awaited the outcome of the US midterm elections and assessed their possible implications for geopolitical developments and Middle East peace efforts.

Brent crude futures declined 26 cents, or 0.25%, to $103.34 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures dropped 53 cents, or 0.55%, to $95.56 per barrel.

The decline came even as industry data indicated an unexpected reduction in US crude inventories during the previous week.

FIIs Return to Indian Equities

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said a noticeable improvement in market sentiment had emerged following the reversal in foreign institutional investor activity.

He highlighted that FIIs had turned net buyers in five of the last six trading sessions, purchasing equities worth Rs 18,661 crore.

According to Vijayakumar, improving corporate earnings, attractive valuations in large-cap companies and reduced enthusiasm surrounding the artificial intelligence trade have contributed to renewed foreign investor interest.

He believes the ongoing recovery could be led by large-cap stocks, particularly major financial companies, which have considerable potential to attract foreign fund inflows.

US Midterm Elections Remain a Key Market Trigger

The outcome of the US midterm elections is another major factor influencing investor sentiment.

Vijayakumar said a Democratic victory in both the House of Representatives and the Senate could weaken President Donald Trump’s ability to push through his political and economic agenda. Such a development could create uncertainty in American markets.

He also suggested that India could potentially benefit from any resulting global market volatility.

With foreign investors returning, crude prices softening and corporate earnings providing fundamental support, domestic equities appear to be maintaining their positive momentum. Investors will continue to monitor global political developments and institutional fund flows for further direction.
