North Korea Showcases Military Strength With New Air Defence Missile Test and Cruise Strike Drill
North Korea has stepped up its military demonstrations by testing a newly developed air defence missile system and conducting a long-range strategic cruise missile strike exercise, state-run media reported on Thursday.
Both exercises were carried out on Wednesday as Pyongyang continued a series of weapons tests in recent weeks, including demonstrations involving cluster munitions, attack drones, precision-guided torpedoes and an intermediate-range hypersonic missile.
South Korea’s military also detected multiple missile launches from North Korea’s Sondok region towards the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.
The latest weapons activities come amid worsening relations between Pyongyang, Seoul and Washington. A dispute over land mines has further strained inter-Korean ties, while Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister recently indicated that North Korea was not interested in resuming talks with the United States.
KCNA Details Capabilities of New Missile System
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the latest air defence missile test was conducted to assess the technical specifications and reliability of the newly developed system.
The agency said the test demonstrated the projectile’s new material and intelligent multiple-guidance capabilities. It also highlighted the system’s ability to detect and track targets, along with the reliability of its detection data-processing equipment.
However, KCNA did not provide further details about the technology used in the missile system.
Strategic Cruise Missile Strike Exercise
In a separate exercise, a firepower sub-unit of a long-range strategic cruise missile unit in eastern North Korea conducted a simulated strike operation.
KCNA reported that the unit successfully hit a virtual airport target using a long-range strategic cruise missile, completing its assigned mission.
The state news agency said the two military exercises were intended to maintain weapons systems at an advanced technical level and strengthen the reliability of the country’s strategic military capabilities.
Unlike ballistic missile launches, cruise missile tests conducted by North Korea are not prohibited under United Nations Security Council sanctions.
North Korea’s Missile Activities Draw Attention
North Korea has repeatedly used major US electoral events as an occasion for missile launches, which are widely viewed as demonstrations of military strength.
Similar launches took place around the US midterm elections four years ago and the presidential election two years ago. The latest weapons demonstrations add to growing concerns over Pyongyang’s expanding military capabilities and its increasingly strained relations with Washington and Seoul.
