Zelensky Looks to Democratic Gains in US Congress for Stronger Ukraine Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced hope that the Democrats’ gains in the US midterm elections will lead to greater American assistance for Ukraine as its war with Russia continues.

Speaking to Germany’s ZDF television on Wednesday, Zelensky said the prospect of Democrats taking control of both chambers of Congress next year could work in Kyiv’s favour. He noted that while he appreciated Republican support, Democrats had been more explicit in their commitment to providing aid to Ukraine.

Zelensky also expressed hope that the political changes in Washington would help rebuild closer relations between the United States and Europe, creating a stronger foundation for continued support.

He said increased military and financial assistance from Congress could put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to ZDF, Zelensky believes that a united commitment from Washington and European countries could have a meaningful impact on the Kremlin.

Relations between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump have faced repeated tensions. Their February 2025 Oval Office meeting was particularly contentious, with Trump accusing the Ukrainian leader of being ungrateful for American assistance. Zelensky has since made efforts to improve ties with the US administration.

Trump has recently taken several steps seen as favourable to Moscow, including a deal involving Russian diesel imports and moves to ease sanctions.

On the diplomatic front, US-led talks involving Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Monday that delegations from both countries would meet to discuss ending the conflict, post-war security arrangements and de-escalation. The negotiations had remained stalled for several months.

During the interview, Zelensky also spoke about Ukraine’s reliance on Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. He acknowledged the crucial role played by the service in maintaining connectivity during the early stages of the war but expressed disagreement with Musk’s position on the conflict.

Ukraine has used Starlink and its military-oriented Starshield network to support attack and air-defence drone operations. Zelensky said last week that both services had resumed functioning at levels seen before restrictions were imposed. Trump has denied having any involvement in the decision concerning the slowdown in service.
