Before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe into the Bhopal dowry death case.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Madhya Pradesh Police questioned Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, for over three hours, during which he reiterated claims related to her mental state and a disputed ₹7 lakh transaction, according to sources cited in media reports.

Twisha Sharma, a former Miss Pune title holder and Noida-based model, was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. While the post-mortem report and in-laws have suggested suicide, her family has alleged dowry-related harassment and foul play.

Husband questioned for over three hours

According to police sources quoted by news agencies, the SIT also conducted a crime scene reconstruction for over two hours as part of its investigation before handing over the case to the CBI.

During questioning, Samarth Singh reportedly told investigators that Twisha had been under emotional distress following an abortion. He also repeated earlier claims that he had transferred ₹7 lakh to her, an allegation that remains part of the disputed narrative in the case.

Sources further said investigators examined his explanation regarding his absence during key phases of the incident and seized several items, including his mobile phone, laptop, passport and identity documents.

CBI takes over investigation

The CBI formally registered an FIR after the Supreme Court directed that the probe be transferred to the central agency, citing the need for an independent and impartial investigation.

The agency also re-registered the original state police FIR, naming Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, former district judge Giribala Singh, as accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

A team from the CBI’s Special Crime Unit has already taken charge of the investigation in Bhopal and begun collecting case records and evidence.

What the initial investigation found

According to the original FIR, Twisha Sharma was brought to AIIMS Bhopal after allegedly being found hanging at home on May 12 night. She was declared brought dead on arrival.

The post-mortem report stated “antemortem hanging by ligature” and noted multiple injuries consistent with possible blunt force trauma. A second autopsy conducted by AIIMS Delhi is still awaited.

Dowry harassment allegations

Twisha’s family has alleged that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment over dowry demands after her marriage in December 2025. They claim she was under severe stress due to ongoing domestic issues.

The accused family, however, has raised counter-allegations regarding her medical condition and personal circumstances.

Supreme Court’s observation

While transferring the case to the CBI, the Supreme Court emphasised that the investigation must remain fair and unbiased, urging both sides to avoid public commentary and instead present their statements before the investigating agency.

The court said this was necessary to ensure the probe proceeds without external influence or prejudice.
