Delhi Police Protest: ACP Manasvi Vashistha Suspended Following Demonstration Against Senior Officers
ACP Manasvi Vashistha has been suspended following a protest by police personnel outside Delhi Police Headquarters, where officers gathered to express their dissatisfaction over the recent confrontation between police officials and lawyers in Shahdara.
The suspension came a day after Vashistha led the demonstration, during which protesters allegedly raised slogans against senior officers and demanded a meeting with Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar. The action against the ACP was reportedly taken over alleged violations of service rules and his conduct during the protest.
Vashistha, who was recently transferred, joined several other personnel outside the headquarters on Monday. The officers wanted the police commissioner to hear their concerns regarding the dispute with lawyers.
What Triggered the Police-Lawyer Dispute?
Tensions escalated after lawyers in Shahdara launched a protest, accusing ACP Vashistha of threatening them. The lawyers alleged that proper procedures were not followed while handling an assault case involving a member of the legal community.
They also accused the ACP of misbehaving with them and allegedly displaying his revolver to intimidate them.
Police officials, however, offered a different version of events. They alleged that a group of around 15 to 20 lawyers entered the SHO’s office, created a disturbance, misbehaved with police personnel and obstructed official work.
Following the complaints and growing tension, authorities transferred ACP Manasvi Vashistha and another officer, Arun Kumar, in an effort to restore normalcy in the eastern districts of Delhi.
Police Personnel Seek Clear Guidelines
The transfer triggered resentment among some police personnel, who argued that officers needed stronger institutional support when dealing with confrontations involving lawyers.
During Monday’s protest, the personnel demanded a meeting with Commissioner Anurag Kumar and called for a standard operating procedure (SOP) to guide officers in handling similar incidents.
Vashistha said the officers wanted to discuss their concerns directly with the commissioner. He also questioned how police personnel could effectively protect citizens if they felt unable to safeguard themselves while carrying out their duties.
More Personnel Join Demonstration
According to a report by Jagran.com, police personnel from different districts continued reaching the headquarters as the demonstration progressed. Several officers reportedly voiced their frustration over the dispute with lawyers.
A large number of women police personnel also joined the gathering during the day. Senior officers were reportedly engaged in efforts to manage the situation.
The suspension of Vashistha marks a significant development in the ongoing dispute, which has exposed tensions between sections of the police force and the legal community in Shahdara.
