Actor Vijay Holds First Public Rally in Puducherry Since Karur Stampede.

Actor–politician Vijay on Tuesday addressed his first public meeting in Puducherry after the Karur stampede, thanking authorities for granting permission to hold the rally, which he said was not allowed in Tamil Nadu.

Beginning his speech by greeting “Puducherry makkal”, Vijay said, “We are not different, we are the same.” He recalled Puducherry’s historical role in Tamil Nadu politics, noting that the Union Territory elected MG Ramachandran in 1974, three years before his Tamil Nadu victory in 1977.

Vijay highlighted local issues, including the absence of ration shops, repeated arrests of Karaikkal fishermen by Sri Lanka, and the need for a new railway line between Puducherry and Cuddalore. He also pointed to civic gaps such as a lack of public toilets and parking, despite Puducherry being a major tourist destination.

Declaring his party’s political ambitions beyond Tamil Nadu, Vijay said, “Our party’s flag will be hoisted in Puducherry just as it will in Tamil Nadu.”

The rally marked Vijay’s return to the public stage 72 days after the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives. Party leader Bussy Anand said the gathering was possible because similar meetings were not allowed in Tamil Nadu, highlighting restrictions on the party’s programmes in the State.

Aadhav Arjuna, TVK general secretary–election campaign, criticised the state government for inadequate security arrangements and called on the Chief Minister to resign and face Vijay in the election. Drawing parallels with MG Ramachandran’s journey, he said TVK would “write a new 50-year history in Puducherry.”
