US Hits Iran’s Chabahar Port, Trump Warns Future Strikes ‘Will Get Much Worse’
The United States carried out fresh strikes on Iran’s strategic port city of Chabahar on Thursday, escalating tensions between the two countries a day after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire “over” and warned Tehran that any further attacks on commercial shipping would invite a far stronger response.
Multiple explosions were reported across Chabahar, with Iranian state media saying power was knocked out in parts of the city. Residents reported hearing loud blasts as emergency teams rushed to the affected areas. The strike marked the first attack on the port since the US-Iran ceasefire announced in April.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces targeted maritime infrastructure and military facilities allegedly linked to Iran’s operations in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the military, around 90 targets were hit in the latest round of strikes.
CENTCOM said the operation was intended to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping after Washington accused Tehran of attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week. US officials said the strikes focused on port infrastructure, maritime traffic control facilities and nearby military assets while avoiding civilian areas and critical energy infrastructure.
The latest military action followed Tuesday’s attack on three cargo ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, an incident the United States blamed on Iran. Trump responded by warning that American retaliation would “get much worse” if such attacks continued.
Iran answered with another round of strikes targeting Kuwait and Bahrain, both home to major US military bases, further fuelling fears of a wider regional conflict. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the United States had inflicted significantly greater damage on Iran than it had received.
“We just hit them very hard… every time they hit us, we’re going to hit them 20,” the US President said. Asked whether Washington was heading toward a broader military conflict with Tehran, Trump replied, “I don’t know, but we would win it very quickly.”
He also claimed the US had already achieved its military objectives, saying Iran had “very little left” and was keen to negotiate, while expressing scepticism over whether Tehran would honour any agreement. Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf condemned the strikes, saying the United States “still hasn’t learned that bullying and breaking promises are no longer cost-free.”
The latest exchange has sharply raised tensions in the Gulf, with fresh concerns that the conflict could escalate further despite earlier efforts to preserve the ceasefire.
