Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar offered candid advice to newcomers trying to carve a space in the film industry.
Speaking at the 70th Filmfare Awards, he didn’t mince words, highlighting common pitfalls that fresh actors often face. His main caution: avoid signing three-film deals with producers at the start of a career, as these can sometimes restrict creative freedom and create unnecessary complications. To illustrate his point, he referenced Aryan Khan’s directorial debut The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, which he said provides a clear look at the challenges a debutant can encounter.
Akshay Kumar’s Advice for Newcomers
When prompted by Shah Rukh Khan to share words of wisdom, Akshay said, “I want to say just one thing to all the newcomers — never sign a 3-film deal with any producer.” He suggested watching The Ba**ds of Bollywood* to understand the hurdles first-time actors face in the industry.
He added, “Do not sign a 3-movie deal. Give your debutant freedom, allow them to run away. As it is said, ‘let them free, if they belong to you, they will come back’.” His comment elicited laughter from Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar, who co-hosted the event.
Lessons from Experience
Reflecting on his own career choices, Akshay stressed the importance of prioritizing work over immediate gains. “Money attracts money, and work attracts money. No work is big or small. Sometimes I take on a role even if it’s small because the story appeals to me, and I want to be part of something meaningful,” he explained.
He also emphasized discipline as the key to longevity in Bollywood: “If you manage to get that right, you will be able to stay in this industry for a long time.”
