The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday suspended Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat from all wrestling-related activities for one year after he failed to make weight at the Senior World Championships.

The 22-year-old, one of India’s top medal prospects in the men’s freestyle 57kg category, was disqualified from the World Championships after exceeding the weight limit by 1.7kg on the day of competition.

In its letter, the WFI stated:

“You are hereby suspended from all wrestling-related activities, both at the national and international level, for a period of one (1) year, effective from the date of the show-cause notice. This decision is final and binding. During the suspension period, you are barred from participating in or associating with any WFI-sanctioned events.”

Earlier, on September 23, 2025, the WFI had issued a show-cause notice seeking an explanation for the lapse. Aman’s response, submitted on September 29, was deemed “unsatisfactory” by the Disciplinary Committee, which also consulted the Chief Coach and supporting staff before deciding on the suspension.

The federation cited indiscipline and lack of professionalism, noting that as an Olympic medallist, Aman was expected to uphold the highest standards.

“You were deputed to attend the Accumulation Camp at Pore, Croatia, starting August 25, 2025, with sufficient time to maintain your weight and fitness. Despite reporting 18 days before your scheduled bout, you were disqualified for being overweight by 1.7kg,” the WFI said.

The federation added that his failure not only affected his credibility but also tarnished India’s image internationally, deprived the nation of a potential medal, and caused financial losses from government-funded training and participation.

Chief coach Jagmander Singh and three other coaching staff — Vinod, Virender, and Narender — were also asked to explain why they did not adequately monitor Aman’s weight management leading up to the championships.
