Apple Names Amar Subramanya as New AI VP, Replacing John Giannandrea.
Apple on Monday appointed Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of artificial intelligence, taking over from longtime executive John Giannandrea. Subramanya will report to software chief Craig Federighi and oversee Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.
CEO Tim Cook praised Giannandrea’s role in advancing Apple’s AI efforts and expressed confidence that Subramanya’s expertise will further strengthen the company’s AI roadmap. Cook also highlighted Federighi’s leadership in initiatives like enhancing Siri for a more personalized experience next year.
About Amar Subramanya
Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft, where he was corporate VP of AI. He previously spent 16 years at Google, including leading engineering for the Gemini assistant. Apple highlighted his ability to translate AI research into practical products as crucial for the company’s AI innovation.
Originally from Karnataka, Subramanya holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communication from Bangalore University (1997–2001) and a PhD from the University of Washington (2005–2009).
About John Giannandrea
Giannandrea, who previously led AI and Search at Google, joined Apple in 2018 to drive Siri and broader AI strategy. He has overseen teams working on Foundation Models, Machine Learning Research, AI Infrastructure, and Search and Knowledge.
Giannandrea will remain in an advisory role until his planned retirement in spring 2026.
