The United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with parades, concerts and fireworks across the country.
As millions of Americans mark the historic occasion despite extreme heat, wildfire risks and deep political divisions. The milestone commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, with celebrations stretching from the East Coast to the West. President Donald Trump is expected to lead the national observance in Washington, DC, where he will address the public on the National Mall before a fireworks display, according to the Associated Press.
Celebrations Across The US
Communities across the country have organised a wide range of events to mark America’s semiquincentennial. Fireworks are set to illuminate the skies over New York City and Chicago’s Navy Pier, while Los Angeles will host a concert featuring Queen Latifah, The Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Stapleton and special guest Chaka Khan.
In Bristol, Rhode Island, the nation’s oldest continuous Independence Day celebration—dating back to 1785—is once again drawing thousands of visitors.
On Friday, Trump travelled to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where he delivered a speech highlighting the country’s founding ideals while warning that communism remains a threat to American liberty.
Heatwave, Fireworks Bans Cast Shadow
The celebrations are unfolding as a powerful heatwave grips large parts of the country. In Washington, soaring temperatures forced the temporary closure of sections of the Great American State Fair, while the city’s Independence Day parade was cancelled.
Elsewhere, hot, dry conditions have prompted burn bans in several states as authorities seek to reduce the risk of wildfires. Fire safety officials have urged residents to exercise caution, even as fireworks industry groups expect strong consumer demand for at-home displays over the holiday weekend.
Despite the weather challenges, many Americans remain eager to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.
In Issaquah, a suburb of Seattle, Megan Kurowski said she planned to celebrate the holiday by watching fireworks from a paddleboard.
“Everyone’s just, from what it seems, been pretty excited about celebrating 250 years,” she said.
Anniversary Amid Political Tensions
The historic anniversary comes at a time of heightened political polarisation in the United States. During his Mount Rushmore address, Trump described communism as a “mortal threat to American liberty,” arguing that it poses one of the greatest challenges facing the country.
“It is the greatest threat to our country, including World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor or even 9/11,” Trump said.
The Independence Day weekend also coincides with a busy sporting and entertainment calendar, including Major League Baseball games, FIFA World Cup matches and concerts across the country.
While extreme weather has altered plans in some places, Americans are continuing with celebrations to mark 250 years since the birth of the nation.
