Gujarat to host grand celebrations for Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary; Amit Shah outlines ‘Unity Parade’, ‘Run for Unity’, and cultural events.
Gujarat is gearing up for grand celebrations of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on October 31, marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced an elaborate lineup of events, including a ‘Unity Parade’, ‘Run for Unity’, and several cultural and tourism showcases to commemorate the Iron Man of India.
In a letter to his cabinet colleagues, Shah described the milestone as a moment of national pride. “Sardar Patel dreamt of a united, strong, and prosperous India, which he realised through his remarkable leadership, vision, and determination. Inspired by his vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the call for ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’, embodying India’s spirit of unity in diversity,” he wrote.
Unity Parade at Statue of Unity
The highlight of the celebrations will be a grand Unity Parade at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, on October 31. State police contingents, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and NCC cadets will take part, along with tableaux from various states, union territories, and paramilitary forces showcasing India’s cultural and regional diversity.
Cultural and Tourism Events
On the eve of Unity Day (October 30), a theatrical performance based on the life and legacy of Sardar Patel will be staged in Ekta Nagar. From October 31 to November 15, coinciding with Tribal Pride Day celebrations, a fortnight-long cultural festival will be held featuring exhibitions of traditional arts, crafts, cuisines, and tourist destinations from across India.
Nationwide ‘Run for Unity’ and Pledge Ceremony
To spread the message of national integration, a Run for Unity will be organised across the country, encouraging participation from all sections of society. Shah also suggested that a National Unity Pledge be taken in schools, offices, and institutions on the day.
Calling for nationwide enthusiasm, Shah urged states, union territories, and ministries to ensure full participation. “National Unity Day should be celebrated with complete energy, zeal, and public involvement so that it takes the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ to new heights and makes the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel a grand and inspiring celebration,” he wrote.
