A tragic road accident in Andhra Pradesh claimed 12 lives early Friday when a private travels bus caught fire after colliding with a two-wheeler near Chinnatekur in Kurnool district.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was carrying around 40 passengers. Of these, 18 passengers have been identified as survivors, while authorities noted that several bodies were severely charred, complicating identification efforts.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am, with the collision triggering a massive blaze that quickly engulfed the entire vehicle. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire initially erupted at the front of the bus before spreading rapidly. Amid the chaos, 12 passengers managed to break open the emergency exit and escape with minor injuries, and they were immediately taken to Kurnool Government Hospital for treatment.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the tragedy, stating, “I am shocked to learn about the devastating bus fire accident near Chinna Tekur village in Kurnool district. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. Government authorities will extend all possible support to the injured and affected families.”
Heavy rainfall in the region at the time may have contributed to the accident. The bus was completely gutted, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Health Minister Sri Satyakumar Yadav said that DNA samples are being collected to identify the victims. He added, “We are prepared to conduct postmortems at the scene, depending on circumstances. Forensic doctors have been dispatched, and Mahaprasthanam vehicles are ready to transport the bodies. Twelve people have been admitted with minor injuries; six have already been discharged after primary treatment. One person sustained serious injuries after jumping from the bus, but their condition is now stable.”
