Aruna Irani Reveals Private Battle With Breast Cancer—Twice.
Veteran actor Aruna Irani has opened up about her long-hidden fight with breast cancer, revealing she was diagnosed not once, but twice. The 76-year-old screen icon, who has appeared in over 500 films and numerous TV shows, chose to keep her battle private while continuing to work.
Speaking to Lehren, Irani recalled discovering a lump during a shoot. “I was filming when I felt something was off. The doctor initially dismissed it, but I insisted it be removed,” she said. While doctors recommended chemotherapy, she opted against it. “I was actively shooting. I couldn’t afford to lose my hair, so I went with medication instead.”
Her cancer returned in March 2020—just before the COVID-19 lockdowns. This time, she followed the full course of treatment, including chemotherapy. “It was my mistake earlier. I didn’t take chemo. This time I did. The treatment has improved—some hair falls out, but it comes back,” she shared.
Irani also revealed other health challenges. She was diagnosed with diabetes at 60, and at one point, doctors believed both her kidneys had failed. Fortunately, she recovered without major procedures and remains in good health.
Aruna Irani began her acting journey in 1961 with Ganga Jumna, and went on to shine in roles throughout the 1960s and ’70s, often alongside comedian Mehmood. Later, she transitioned to television, directing and producing hits like Mehndi Tere Naam Ki and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand. Her most recent appearance was in Kesari Veer.
For her contribution to Indian cinema, Irani received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
