As Nitish Kumar Looks at Rajya Sabha, Son Nishant May Step Into Politics

As Nitish Kumar prepares to shift to the Rajya Sabha, Bihar politics may be witnessing the beginning of a generational transition. His son, Nishant Kumar, is set to formally enter active politics on March 8 by joining the Janata Dal (United).

The development comes shortly after Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, sparking discussions about the future leadership of the party. Senior JD(U) leaders said Nishant Kumar will take the party’s primary membership during a public event in Patna, which is expected to be attended by party workers from across Bihar.

Questions around future leadership

After nearly two decades as Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha has triggered speculation about the next phase of leadership within the JD(U). Although party leaders say Nishant’s entry is not formally linked to Nitish Kumar’s shift to national politics, many observers see the timing as an indication of a gradual transition within the party.

For years, JD(U) workers have urged Nitish Kumar to bring his son into public life. Many leaders believe Nishant’s entry could help energise the party organisation and strengthen its base ahead of future elections. Within the party, some also feel that introducing a younger face into leadership could help maintain unity and provide a fresh direction for the organisation.

A low-profile life so far

Despite being the son of a prominent political leader, Nishant Kumar has largely stayed away from active politics. Born in Bakhtiyarpur in 1975, he completed his schooling in Patna before earning a degree in software engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra.

Those familiar with the family often describe him as someone who prefers a quiet and low-profile lifestyle. He has rarely been seen at political events and has generally kept a distance from party activities.

Early signs of political involvement

Speculation about Nishant Kumar’s political future began to grow during the run-up to the Bihar Assembly elections last year, when he appeared at a few public meetings in support of his father’s campaign. More recently, he was also seen offering prayers at the Mahavir Mandir on the occasion of Nitish Kumar’s 75th birthday.

Party leaders say that after formally joining the JD(U), Nishant Kumar may gradually be given responsibilities within the organisation to help him gain political experience. Some insiders also suggest he could begin touring various districts of Bihar to interact with party workers and strengthen grassroots connections.

His entry comes at a time when Bihar politics is undergoing a significant shift. As Nitish Kumar transitions toward a role in the Rajya Sabha, many within the party see Nishant Kumar’s political debut as the beginning of a new chapter for the JD(U).
