In a major leadership overhaul, Microsoft has appointed Indian-origin executive Asha Sharma as Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming. She takes over from Phil Spencer, who is stepping down after spending 38 years at the company.

The announcement was made by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, who reiterated that gaming remains central to the company’s consumer ambitions. He highlighted Sharma’s leadership experience across AI, product development and large-scale consumer platforms, noting her previous roles at Instacart and Meta before joining Microsoft.

A New Vision For Xbox

Sharma has indicated that her immediate priority will be reinforcing Microsoft’s commitment to its core gaming audience while expanding across devices. Referring to Xbox, she said the platform must feel seamless whether accessed on console, PC, mobile or cloud.

She emphasised enabling developers to build games once and distribute them globally without platform constraints — signalling a stronger push toward ecosystem integration and accessibility.

Business Headwinds In Gaming

The leadership change comes at a time when Microsoft’s gaming division faces economic and competitive pressures. The company recently reported a drop in quarterly gaming revenue and acknowledged impairment charges within the segment. Rising costs and softer consumer spending have also affected hardware sales, prompting pricing adjustments in some markets.

Expanded Role For Matt Booty

As part of the restructuring, Matt Booty has been elevated to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer. Microsoft Gaming now oversees nearly 40 studios across Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard and King, managing global franchises such as Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Candy Crush Saga and Fallout.

Spencer Reflects On 38-Year Journey

In a message to employees, Spencer described his tenure — which began as an intern in 1988 — as “the privilege of a lifetime.” He will remain in an advisory role through the summer to support a smooth transition. With Sharma at the helm, Microsoft Gaming is set to focus on cross-platform expansion, deeper engagement with players and creators, and long-term strategic growth in an increasingly competitive global gaming landscape.
