Michael Vaughan Blasts England’s Cockiness: “Australia Are Laughing at Them”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed the national team following their fourth consecutive Ashes defeat in Australia, after Ben Stokes’ side lost by 82 runs in the third Test at Adelaide, giving Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Writing for The Telegraph, Vaughan said England’s approach had been completely exposed, and he criticised the team’s overconfidence over the past three years.

“The whole approach of this England side has been badly exposed on this Ashes tour. Heads will roll after a defeat like this. Losing inside 11 days is the worst I can remember in Australia. England have had a cockiness about them for three years, and the entire cricketing world has wanted to shut them up. This tour has been humbling for them,” he wrote.

Vaughan also targeted England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ batting philosophy, calling it ill-suited to Australian conditions:

“The Aussies are laughing. They can’t believe how fragile this team has been given the talent in the side. England have been told for four years that this style would work in Australia. I don’t know where that came from. The only teams I’ve seen win here grind the opposition down and have disciplined bowling units. We have neither,” he added.

England’s Ongoing Struggles Down Under

The Adelaide defeat extends England’s losing streak in Australia to four consecutive Tests. Their last win came in 2011 under Andrew Strauss, when they retained the Ashes 3-1. Since then, England have played 18 Tests in Australia, losing 16 and drawing two.

With two matches left in the series, Ben Stokes and his team will look to salvage pride and try to end their prolonged run of defeats. England last won the Ashes at home in 2015, while Australia has retained the urn four times since, including the 2017–18 series win in Australia.
