Asia Cup Squad Selection: Big Calls Loom as Gill, Bumrah, Rinku Face Uncertainty.
With the Asia Cup T20 set to begin on September 9 in the UAE, the Indian selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19. The squad announcement is expected to reveal India’s direction ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar Cleared to Lead
Suryakumar has cleared a post-surgery fitness test and is set to captain India in a major tournament for the first time.
Opening Debate: Gill vs In-Form Batters
The biggest talking point is Shubman Gill’s inclusion. Fresh from a record-breaking Test series, Gill’s overall T20I strike rate (139) lags behind the high-tempo template India have embraced. Abhishek Sharma (535 runs, SR 193) and Sanju Samson (487 runs, SR 171) have thrived as openers.
Tilak Varma (413 runs, SR 170) has locked in at No. 3, while Yashasvi Jaiswal (559 runs, SR 159 in IPL 2025) remains in contention as backup. If Gill is named vice-captain, his place in the XI could disrupt this settled order.
Middle Order: Iyer Returns?
Shreyas Iyer’s strong IPL 2025 (604 runs, SR 175) puts pressure on Riyan Parag, who may lose out despite his all-round utility.
- Wicketkeeper Race
- Sanju Samson is first choice.
- Jitesh Sharma, after a strong IPL with RCB (SR 170), is ahead of Dhruv Jurel for the backup role.
- Pant and Kishan remain sidelined with injuries.
Finishers Under Pressure
- Rinku Singh has struggled (190 runs in 18 T20Is since WC 2024, modest IPL form).
- Shivam Dube, a key player in the 2024 WC win, has dipped in strike rate and consistency, putting his spot at risk.
All-Round Options
Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are automatic picks. Washington Sundar adds balance with bat and ball. Nitish Reddy misses out with injury.
Bumrah Dilemma
- Jasprit Bumrah has declared himself available, but selectors may rest him given UAE’s conditions and his workload ahead of a heavy home Test season.
- Arshdeep Singh continues to lead the attack.
- Prasidh Krishna (IPL 2025 Purple Cap, 25 wickets) is pushing for a comeback.
- Harshit Rana is another rising option.
Spin Department
Varun Chakravarthy is a certainty. One of Kuldeep Yadav or Ravi Bishnoi will partner him, though Washington Sundar could be preferred for batting depth.
Likely Squad (16–17 Players)
XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh.
