Aung San Suu Kyi Holds Rare Meeting With Red Cross Official, Myanmar Junta Says

Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday met a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the military-backed government said.

In what appears to be one of her first publicly disclosed meetings with an international official since the 2021 military coup. Government spokesperson Khine Khine Soe said Suu Kyi met Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s resident representative in Myanmar, in the capital, Naypyitaw. The announcement was made in a post on Telegram.

The ICRC did not immediately comment on the meeting.

The 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been in detention since February 2021, when Myanmar’s military overthrew her elected government in a coup, triggering widespread unrest and a prolonged political crisis.

Since then, little information has emerged about Suu Kyi’s health or whereabouts, and no foreign leader or international envoy has publicly confirmed meeting her during her detention. The reported meeting comes amid continued international concern over her well-being.

In April, following a military-organised election that saw former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing become Myanmar’s president, authorities announced that Suu Kyi had been moved from prison to house arrest. The decision came as the military government faced mounting international pressure over her continued detention.
