Sophie Molineux named Australia’s all-format captain, succeeding Alyssa Healy

Australia have appointed Sophie Molineux as the long-term captain across all formats, taking over from Alyssa Healy following her decision to retire from international cricket later this summer. The left-arm spinner will begin her captaincy in the T20I leg of the upcoming home series against India, before assuming full-time leadership ahead of the Caribbean tour and the T20 World Cup in England.

Stepping into Healy’s shoes

Molineux acknowledged the responsibility of replacing one of Australia’s most influential players:
“It’s a real honour to be named Australian captain, especially following Alyssa, who’s had such a huge impact on this team. I’m grateful for the trust shown in me and excited to grow alongside this group of players.”

Leadership structure

While Molineux takes the top role, Tahlia McGrath remains vice-captain and Ashleigh Gardner has been elevated as second vice-captain, strengthening the team’s leadership core. Selectors cited McGrath’s recent form and workload management as reasons for the decision, despite her strong record as stand-in captain.

A calculated risk

Molineux, 28, has battled injuries and has not played T20I or Test cricket since 2024. However, her domestic record—including leading the Melbourne Renegades to the 2024–25 WBBL title—highlighted her leadership credentials. Selector Shawn Flegler said her workload will be carefully monitored, prioritising key tournaments.

Early captaincy timeline

Molineux will lead Australia in the three T20Is against India, after which Healy will captain the ODI and Test matches in her farewell series. The move sets the stage for a new era in Australian women’s cricket as the team prepares for a busy international calendar.
