Bangladesh Erupts in Protests After Alleged Rape of Hindu Woman by Local Politician.
Widespread protests have broken out across Bangladesh following the alleged rape of a 21-year-old Hindu woman in Cumilla, reportedly by a local politician affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The incident has triggered outrage, particularly among students of Dhaka University, who took to the streets demanding justice and swift legal action.
Videos circulating on social media showed large gatherings of students chanting slogans and clapping in unison, calling for accountability. Protesters are urging authorities to act decisively against those involved in the assault and its subsequent exploitation online.
According to police, five individuals have been arrested so far, including the primary accused, Fazor Ali, 38, a resident of Ramchandrapur Pachkitta village and a member of the BNP. Three of those arrested are accused of recording and distributing a video of the survivor, which was later circulated on social media platforms.
The alleged assault took place on the night of June 26, when Fazor Ali reportedly forced his way into the survivor’s father’s home while she was staying there with her children for the local festival of Hari Seva. Her husband is currently employed overseas in Dubai.
Despite efforts by locals to stop the attack—some residents reportedly caught and beat the accused—Ali managed to escape. He was later apprehended in Dhaka’s Saydabad area early Sunday morning.
Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act based on the victim’s formal complaint. The Muradnagar police have launched a full investigation.
The case has also reignited concerns over communal tensions in Bangladesh, especially regarding attacks targeting minority communities. Activists and residents claim that instances of violence against Hindus have risen since the political transition following the departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
As protests continue, civil society and human rights groups are urging the government to ensure justice is delivered swiftly and impartially.
