Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI Future Uncertain; Possible Retirement After Australia Tour.
The ODI futures of India’s experienced batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain uncertain, with reports suggesting that the duo may not be part of India’s plans leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Having already stepped away from T20 Internationals and Test cricket in the past year, speculation is mounting that they could also conclude their ODI careers soon.
According to Dainik Jagran, Rohit and Kohli might retire from ODIs following India’s upcoming tour of Australia in October, where three 50-over matches are scheduled. A source close to the team management reportedly said, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit into our plans for the ODI World Cup 2027.” The report also suggested that the players wanted to be part of the England tour but were informed by selectors that they were unlikely to be included, prompting their retirement decisions.
On the other hand, a report by news agency PTI states that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no immediate plans regarding Rohit and Kohli’s ODI careers. The board’s current focus is on the upcoming Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup next year. A BCCI official, speaking anonymously, told PTI,
“Obviously, if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have plans about their future, they would communicate it to the BCCI, just as they did before the England Test tour. From the team’s perspective, the next big target is the T20 World Cup in February, and preparations will be focused on that. The immediate priority is to send the best team for the Asia Cup, hoping all players are fit and available.”
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have yet to confirm whether they aim to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The BCCI reportedly prefers to carefully gauge public sentiment before making any decisions, given the immense popularity of the two players.
India’s ODI tour of Australia begins on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. This will be followed by three home ODIs against South Africa in December. The 2026 calendar also features ODI series against New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, the West Indies, and another series against New Zealand.
