Bengaluru Police File FIR After SC Lawyer Tries to Hurl Shoe at CJI Gavai

Bengaluru police have filed an FIR against advocate Rakesh Kishore for attempting to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court.

Details of the Incident

The FIR, lodged under BNS Sections 132 and 133, was filed by the All India Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru. The incident occurred two days ago, when Kishore tried to hurl a shoe at CJI Gavai in his courtroom. Security personnel immediately intervened, preventing any harm.

During the incident, Kishore reportedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan” (India will not tolerate the disrespect of Sanatana Dharma). Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained composed, telling the courtroom, “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”

Immediate Actions Taken

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended Kishore’s license with immediate effect, barring him from appearing, acting, pleading, or practising in any court, tribunal, or authority across India. The 71-year-old lawyer was escorted out of the court premises following the incident.

Reason Behind the Attack

Police sources indicated that Kishore was reportedly upset over CJI Gavai’s remarks last month during a hearing on the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. The CJI had termed the plea a “publicity interest litigation”, stating, “This is purely publicity interest litigation…. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation.”

The incident has drawn nationwide attention and prompted swift disciplinary and legal action, highlighting the seriousness of courtroom security and the zero-tolerance approach towards attacks on judges.
