Bhopal Police rule out murder in Twisha Sharma death case

Twisha Sharma’s death was a case of suicide and not murder, Bhopal Police said, citing post-mortem findings and evidence collected during the investigation so far.

Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said forensic findings pointed towards “ante-mortem hanging”, indicating that Sharma was alive at the time of hanging. According to police, no evidence suggesting homicide has emerged at this stage of the probe.

“What we have found so far from the post-mortem report and other evidence that we have collected is that it is a case of suicide and not of murder,” Kumar said. The 33-year-old Noida resident was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, just a few months after marrying advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025.

Following her death, Sharma’s family accused her husband and in-laws of mental harassment and dowry-related abuse, alleging that she had been subjected to sustained pressure after marriage. Police also rejected allegations made by Sharma’s mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, who had claimed that the deceased struggled with drug addiction.

According to Commissioner Kumar, neither the post-mortem report nor the ongoing investigation has found any indication of drug use. “There is nothing about drugs in the post-mortem report. In our investigation too, we have not found any such things,” he said.

Despite the police assessment, the case continues to remain contentious. Sharma’s husband and mother-in-law have both been named as accused, while Samarth Singh has reportedly remained missing since the incident.

Police have issued a lookout notice against him and initiated proceedings to revoke his passport.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s family has demanded a second post-mortem examination, claiming there were injuries on her body and questioning the fairness of the investigation. The family has also sought judicial intervention to ensure an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding her death.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is continuing its inquiry as authorities examine the conflicting claims made by police, the victim’s family and her in-laws.
