Birthday Boy Harry Brook Shines as England Kick Off Super 8 with Win Over Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka mastered the first half. England owned the second — and in T20 cricket, that’s the only half that matters.

At the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, Sri Lanka produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict England to 146 for 7 in their Super 8 encounter. But what looked like a strong platform at the interval dissolved into one of their most disappointing batting efforts of the tournament.

Bowled out for just 95 in 16.4 overs, Sri Lanka slumped to a 51-run defeat, gifting England skipper Harry Brook two crucial points on his birthday.

Spin Turns the Game

The surface in Pallekele clearly favoured slower bowlers. Sri Lanka leaned into that advantage, sending down 12 overs of spin for five wickets. Yet England bettered them in the same conditions.

Part-time off-spinner Will Jacks emerged as the unlikely match-winner. Bowling his full quota, Jacks dismantled the top order with three key strikes, finishing with figures that underlined England’s superior execution. In all, England’s spinners claimed seven wickets in a superb defence of what appeared a below-par total.

The victory also marked England’s 12th successive men’s T20I win over Sri Lanka, continuing a dominance that stretches back more than a decade.

A Chase That Unravelled

Sri Lanka’s pursuit of 147 never truly gathered momentum. Expectations were high around Pathum Nissanka, who had struck a century at the same venue just days earlier. But after two early boundaries, he fell for nine, and the innings soon spiralled.

From 15 without loss, Sri Lanka crashed to 34 for 5 inside the powerplay. Jofra Archer provided the first breakthrough, before Jacks struck twice in a single over to remove Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake. Panic replaced composure, and the shot selection reflected it.

Dunith Wellalage briefly counterattacked but departed cheaply, giving Jacks his third wicket and effectively ending the contest inside six overs.

Resistance Without Support

Captain Dasun Shanaka attempted to steady the innings with a fighting 30, but wickets continued to tumble at the other end. Liam Dawson chipped in with a sharp return catch, while Jamie Overton forced an unusual dismissal as Dushan Hemantha dislodged his own stumps attempting to evade a bouncer.

Once Shanaka fell in the 15th over — snapped up by Adil Rashid — the end came swiftly. No Sri Lankan partnership crossed 20, highlighting the scale of the collapse. Head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and his players were left shell-shocked. From a position of control at the halfway stage, Sri Lanka’s Super 8 campaign was derailed by a batting implosion.

For England, it was a timely boost ahead of tougher assignments in Group 2. For Sri Lanka, it was a night that will sting — a reminder that in T20 cricket, 20 good overs are never enough.
