British MP Bob Blackman Moves Motion in UK Parliament Backing India’s Sovereignty Over Jammu and Kashmir.
British Conservative MP Bob Blackman, representing Harrow East, on Monday introduced an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the UK House of Commons reaffirming India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over Jammu and Kashmir. The motion was introduced to coincide with Jammu and Kashmir Accession Day and was co-signed by Jim Shannon of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
The motion acknowledges the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh on October 26, 1947, which formally integrated Jammu and Kashmir into India. It also notes the continued observance of Jammu and Kashmir Accession Day by people of Indian and Kashmiri heritage in the UK, recognising its historical and cultural importance.
According to the text, the motion “reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of India over the State of Jammu and Kashmir” and expresses sympathy for victims of terrorism in the region, including those affected by the Pahalgam attack.
The statement welcomes peaceful commemorations in the UK that encourage dialogue, understanding, and community cohesion, while urging respect for international law and sovereign boundaries in discussions about Jammu and Kashmir.
Observers have described the motion as a significant show of support for India’s position on the region within the UK Parliament, reinforcing the historical legitimacy of Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India.
