Meta India Head, Multiple Social Media Accounts Booked Over Alleged Posts Targeting PM Modi

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered cases against Meta India Head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests.

The cases were filed following complaints by two individuals who alleged that they came across digitally manipulated videos and images of the Prime Minister while browsing Instagram. According to the complaints, the content portrayed the Prime Minister in an obscene, derogatory and misleading manner and was accompanied by abusive comments that encouraged wider circulation on social media.

Complaints Allege AI-Generated, Morphed Content

The complainants alleged that the posts contained offensive language and indecent remarks directed at the Prime Minister and others featured in the manipulated content.

According to the complaints, the material appeared to be digitally altered or AI-generated and had the potential to spread misinformation, disturb public order, incite hostility, defame public figures and violate applicable laws. The complaints were filed by S. Aravind Reddy, a businessman, and T. Saikiran Goud, a Telangana BJP activist.

Posts During CJP Protest Under Scanner

Police are also examining several posts and comments shared during the student protests over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, including content that allegedly contained abusive or profane remarks targeting the Prime Minister.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had led nationwide demonstrations demanding education reforms and the resignation of the then Union Education Minister over the controversy.

Meta Assures Government of Additional Safeguards

The development comes days after Meta briefly blocked a video posted from the Prime Minister’s official Facebook account, drawing criticism from the Centre.

Following the incident, Meta assured the government that it would strengthen safeguards for high-profile accounts. According to sources, posts from the Prime Minister’s account will now receive enhanced oversight, with moderation decisions requiring review by senior company officials before any action is taken.

Sources also said Meta representatives are expected to meet government officials later this week to discuss content moderation and other regulatory issues.

Delhi Police Also Issued Notices

Earlier this week, Delhi Police directed multiple social media platforms to remove posts and videos allegedly containing abusive or offensive remarks against the Prime Minister that were uploaded during the Jantar Mantar protests and after the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.

Police have also issued notices to several social media accounts, including some news portals, seeking action over posts allegedly targeting the Prime Minister. The investigations by both Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police and Delhi Police are currently underway.
