CSK Denies Extra Payment Claim for Dewald Brevis After Ashwin’s Comments.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have clarified their signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis following Ravichandran Ashwin’s recent remarks suggesting the team paid extra to secure him mid-season in IPL 2025. Brevis replaced seamer Gurjapneet Singh and was signed for a league fee of INR 2.2 crore.

CSK denied Ashwin’s claim, stating the signing fully complied with IPL rules. “Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player were in complete compliance with IPL regulations,” the franchise said.

According to IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, a replacement player cannot receive a higher fee than the player being replaced, and fees are adjusted for mid-season signings based on matches already played.

Brevis made an immediate impact for CSK, scoring 225 runs in six innings at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180, including two match-winning half-centuries. He was named Player of the Match against Gujarat Titans for 57 off 23 balls and earlier scored 52 off 25 against Kolkata Knight Riders.

CSK will hope Brevis continues his explosive form next season to help the franchise recover after finishing last in IPL 2025—their worst-ever campaign.
