The death toll in the boiler explosion at a Vedanta Limited power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district has climbed to 14, while around 20 workers remain hospitalised, several in critical condition, following one of the most serious industrial accidents in the region in recent years.

The blast occurred around 2.30 pm on Tuesday at the thermal power facility in Singhitarai, when a high-pressure steam tube connected to the boiler reportedly ruptured. The explosion caused massive force impact, leaving workers engaged in maintenance and painting tasks severely injured.

Four workers died on the spot, while others later succumbed to injuries during treatment. Officials said around 30 workers were affected in total.

Rescue operations and official statement

Sakti Superintendent of Police Praful Thakur confirmed that rescue and search operations have been completed, with no further victims suspected to be trapped. He said, “So far, 14 people have died and 20 are under treatment across hospitals. Five have been referred for advanced care,” adding that multiple teams were deployed to secure the site.

Cause of explosion under probe

Preliminary assessment indicates the blast was caused by a leak in a high-pressure steam pipeline connected to the boiler unit. The sudden rupture led to a powerful explosion, triggering panic and widespread damage inside the plant.

Workers described the impact as extremely intense, with one eyewitness saying the blast felt “like a missile had landed,” followed by thick smoke engulfing the area within moments.

Government response and compensation

Vishnu Deo Sai described the incident as “extremely tragic” and ordered a high-level investigation into the cause of the explosion. The state government has announced compensation for victims’ families and financial aid for the injured. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered by the district administration.

Sakti Collector Amrit Vikas Topno said priority is being given to treatment and relief measures, adding that medical expenses and compensation will be handled by the plant management.

Plant details

The affected facility is part of a 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power project originally developed by Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd and later acquired by Vedanta in 2022. One unit is operational, while the second remains under construction.

Security has been tightened at the site as families continue to gather outside hospitals, awaiting updates on the condition of the injured workers.
