Clashes erupt outside Assam jail as fans attack detainees over Zubeen Garg’s death

Violence erupted outside Baksa District Jail in Assam on Wednesday as fans of late singer Zubeen Garg attacked.

The convoy carrying five people arrested in connection with his death. Supporters gathered outside the jail to demand justice, pelting stones at police vehicles and setting one on fire. Authorities used aerial firing and tear gas to control the mob, while security around the jail and surrounding areas was tightened.

The five in judicial custody include event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg, and two personal security officers, including Nandeswar Bora. They were arrested following a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Assam government after claims of foul play in Garg’s death.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the violent protests and accused certain political groups of attempting to incite unrest among fans. He appealed for calm, urging citizens to allow the investigation to proceed and warning that those provoking violence would face strict action.

Zubeen Garg, 52, a celebrated Assamese singer who rose to national fame with hits like Ya Ali, died during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19. Originally reported as a sudden illness, the case is now being investigated for possible foul play following complaints by his wife and fans. The SIT has so far arrested five individuals connected to the case, including Garg’s manager and event organiser, as the investigation continues.
