Cloudburst Hits Uttarakhand’s Chamoli: One Feared Dead, Widespread Damage in Tharali

Late Friday night, a cloudburst struck Tharali area of Chamoli district, causing massive destruction.

Hardest hit areas: Tharali market, Kotdeep, and Tehsil complex, where debris swept through homes, the SDM residence, and several buildings.

Casualties: A young girl is feared dead in Sagwara village after being trapped under debris; another person reported missing.

Damage: Vehicles buried under rubble, shops in Chepdaon market destroyed, and many cars washed away. Streets turned into waterlogged ponds.

Rescue Ops: SDRF, police, and administration teams are on-site. BRO is clearing blocked routes including Tharali-Gwaldam and Tharali-Sagwara roads.

Govt response: CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said he is monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with officials.

Precautionary measures: All schools and Anganwadi centres in Tharali tehsil will remain closed on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
