Tesla Set to Debut in India with Mumbai Experience Centre, Teases Launch on X.

Tesla is officially gearing up to enter the Indian market, teasing a “coming soon” message on its newly created X (formerly Twitter) account. The post signals the electric vehicle (EV) giant’s long-awaited launch in India, culminating with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15.

According to media invitations, the Mumbai outlet will be branded as a “Tesla Experience Centre” and initially cater to VIP guests and business partners, with public access expected a week later. Customers will be able to explore Tesla’s lineup, compare configurations, and begin placing orders—likely starting with the Model Y SUV.

Model Y Deliveries to Begin by August
As per a Bloomberg report, deliveries of Tesla’s Model Y are expected to begin in late August. Tesla has already imported six Model Y units into India—five standard versions priced at $32,500, and one long-range variant at $46,000—along with Superchargers and accessories, primarily from China and the U.S.

Despite its popularity abroad, the Model Y faces a pricing challenge in India due to steep import duties. Cars priced under $40,000 attract about 70% tax, which may significantly increase final prices for Indian consumers.

Years of Wait, Finally Over
Tesla’s entry into India has been delayed for years due to regulatory barriers and negotiations over import duties. While CEO Elon Musk had previously hinted at investing up to $3 billion in local production, the company appears to be prioritizing import-led operations for now.

The Mumbai launch comes more than a year after Musk cancelled a planned India visit amid unresolved policy discussions. Still, Tesla’s presence is expected to energize India’s evolving EV sector.

Hiring Surge, Market Bet
Tesla has ramped up recruitment across India in recent months, hiring for roles in sales, service, and store management. Job listings also indicate interest in supply chain and vehicle operations, possibly linked to future goals such as Autopilot technology or broader service infrastructure.

India remains a relatively small but growing EV market, buoyed by urban demand and increasing government incentives. Tesla’s move coincides with the company’s efforts to offset declining global sales and utilize idle production capacity.

India Entry: Just the First Gear?
While local production is not on the immediate horizon, Tesla’s India debut could eventually evolve into deeper market integration—if early demand proves promising and regulatory conditions improve. For now, Indian fans can circle July 15 as a landmark date: when Tesla’s long-teased India journey finally begins on the ground.
